1. Membership of the LBA
The legal profession in the Lao PDR is quickly emerging.  As the Lao PDR heads towards WTO membership, and as justice and law reform continue to advance within the country, lawyers are becoming an invaluable profession.

Membership of the LBA is required for a lawyer to be able to provide legal representation to an individual or legal entity.

Membership of the LBA brings with it many other advantages:

  1. Access to the support network of the LBA
  2. Access to the training services of the LBA
  3. The ability to participate in legal aid and legal education services
  4. The ability to be a part of the growing legal profession in the Lao PDR

2. LBA Full Membership criteria
Pre-requisites for applicants seeking membership of the LBA include the following:

  1. Be a Lao citizen
  2. Have a Law Degree
  3. Never have been convicted by the Court, except for minor offences
  4. Not be a public servant
  5. Have completed the 6 week intern law training programme and 9 months supervised practice

Documents in relation to the LBA are available here.

3. LBA Intern Program
Before an applicant becomes a member of the LBA, he/she has to successfully complete the 6 week Intern Law Training Programme and then undertake a period of supervised practice for a period of 9 months as an intern.

Once the training programme and supervised practice have both been completed and if the LBA considers that the applicant’s progress through both of them was of the required standard, the LBA will recommend to the Ministry of Justice that the candidate be licensed as a lawyer.

Once licensed, the applicant is eligible to be accepted as a member of the LBA, such approval resting with the Ministry of Justice.
