COMPLAINTS

The LBA encourages and greatly values the volunteer involvement of law students in its various services and programs.  Law student volunteers are a fundamental part of the LBA team.  In particular, the LBA is eager to assist student volunteers through their involvement with the LBA to build their legal skills and capacities.

The LBA is grateful for the invaluable assistance student volunteers provide to building the LBA services and programs; without them, continuing these services and programs would be very difficult.

The LBA is working closely with the Faculty of Law and Political Sciences, National University of Laos, Vientiane and is building relationships with Law Faculties in Luang Prabang and Savannakhet, to build further opportunities for volunteerism.

About our current student volunteers

Currently, the LBA has numerous student volunteers assisting them.  Most student volunteers assist with the LBA’s legal aid services and public legal education programme activities, providing support to the Legal Clinic lawyer who is handling a particular case, analysing the legal issues involved in particular cases and suggesting advice and providing reports and other documents to support the operation of the LBA Legal Aid clinic.

The contribution of each of these students is highly valued by the LBA.

Why volunteer?

The LBA and the Faculty of Law and Political Sciences, National University of Laos, both view volunteerism of law students in legal services and programs as a highly effective way to improve and quicken the students’ legal skills and knowledge.  By volunteering, students are able to learn about areas of law they become involved in.  In addition, students increase their analysis, problem-solving and communication skills.  Students also can get a better understanding of the legal problems that people of the Lao PDR are facing and how they are able to help address those problems.  All of these skills will help make these law students better lawyers.

In addition, volunteering at the LBA provides insight to law students about the legal profession.  In particular, it helps them to understand what it will mean to become a lawyer and member of the LBA and what they will able to be able to contribute to the society in doing so.

When can students volunteer?

Volunteers are greatly relied upon by the LBA all year round.  Normally however, there are two intakes of volunteer legal assistants each year - one in January and another in July.

Usually, student volunteers work 5 days per week during the course of their internship however this depends on the number of volunteers and the work load for the services and programs which volunteers are able to assist on.

The LBA requires student volunteers to commit to working in accordance with the times agreed between them and the LBA for a period of up to six months.

How to become a volunteer?

To apply for a student volunteer position law students must be in 4th year of a law degree and complete the required application form, which is available at the Faculty of Law and Political Sciences, National University of Laos, Vientiane and the LBA office in Vientiane.
